SUMMARY:Designing Pedestrian Facilities for Accessibility – Webinar Series Course
DESCRIPTION:Facilities in the public right-of-way (including walkways\, ramps\, curb ramps and turning spaces\, detectable warning surfaces\, crosswalks\, and pedestrian overpasses and underpasses) must be designed\, constructed and maintained to serve all users. To meet the needs of all users\, those involved with designing\, building and maintaining infrastructure need a clear understanding of\nthe wide range of abilities that occur within the population and the challenges in the public right-of-way faced by persons with disabilities. This will be conveyed via discussion\, photographs and videos. The course will identify applicable laws\, regulations\, guidelines and standards pertaining to accessibility for persons with disabilities. Requirements for ensuring accessibility in existing facilities versus work in new construction and alterations will be discussed. Design elements necessary for achieving accessibility in the public right-of-way will be reviewed. Topics covered include the pedestrian access route\, curb ramps\, detectable warning surfaces\, crosswalks\, accessible pedestrian signals and on-street parking. DESCRIPTION:Rural roadway departures make up a third of U.S. traffic fatalities—about 30 people a day. The Every Day Counts round five (EDC-5) initiative\, Focus on Reducing Rural Roadway Departures (FoRRRwD)\, features four pillars: Addressing All Public Roads\, Systemic Approach\, Safety Action Plans\, and Proven Countermeasures. This course provides participants with some tools for addressing roadway departure crashes. Well-developed\, designed\, implemented\, maintained\, and operated traffic signal control projects are essential to this process. Engineering tools are available to design\, optimize\, analyze\, and simulate traffic flow. This course addresses the application of the “Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices” (MUTCD) to intersection displays\, as well as signal timing\, computerized traffic signal systems\, control strategies\, integrated systems\, traffic control simulation\, and optimization software. The course is divided into two primary parts: Traffic Signal Timing and Design\, and Traffic Signal Systems. \nThe Webinar is targeted to Traffic engineering personnel from State\, Federal\, and local agencies involved in planning\, design\, operation or maintenance of traffic signals or traffic signal systems. SUMMARY:Federal Highway Administration’s Every Day Counts Executive Session
DESCRIPTION:The Every Day Counts (EDC) program has changed the way we engage people\, products and processes. For nearly 10 years\, FHWA has worked with our stakeholders and partners to achieve tangible successes for the highway community\, and the Americans who travel our roads every day.  If you’re already familiar with EDC innovations\, then you know that real game changers come from this program.  For example\, in EDC 3-4\, the deployment of e-Construction helped lead to savings on average of $40\,000 per project and 1.78 hours of staff time per day.  Currently\, 46 states are using e-Construction and enjoying these benefits as a result.  And that is just one example. \nOn September 23rd at 2:30 pm EDT\, FHWA will be hosting a virtual meeting to provide an introduction to the EDC-6 initiatives.  All FHWA staff are welcome to participate in this event\, and we encourage you to share this invitation with your STIC members\, transportation partners\, and stakeholders.  Additional information and factsheets on these initiatives can be found on the EDC web site. \nRegister here!
