SUMMARY:Designing Pedestrian Facilities for Accessibility – online
DESCRIPTION:Facilities in the public right-of-way (including walkways\, ramps\, curb ramps and landings\, crosswalks\, and pedestrian overpasses and underpasses) must be designed\, constructed and maintained to serve all users. To meet the needs of all users\, those involved with designing\, building and maintaining infrastructure need a clear understanding of the wide range of abilities that occur within the population and the challenges in the public right-of-way faced by persons with disabilities. This course will identify applicable laws\, regulations\, guidelines and standards pertaining to accessibility for persons with disabilities. Requirements for ensuring accessibility in existing facilities versus work in new construction and alternations will be discussed. Design elements necessary for achieving accessibility in the public right-of-way will be reviewed. Best practices will be identified. A detailed handout will be provided\, including resources on accessibility. Specific Topics to Be Covered Include: • Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) and Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines: Laws and Regulations • Legal Requirements • Pedestrian Characteristics • Pedestrian Access Route (PAR) • Curb Ramps and Other Transitions • Detectable Warnings • Pedestrian Crossings • Street Furniture and Parking • Work Zones and Maintenance • Accessible Pedestrian Signals The target audience for this workshop is local\, state and private sector personnel with responsibility for designing\, constructing and maintaining facilities in the public right—of-way. DESCRIPTION:Motorists\, pedestrians\, and bicyclists face greater mobility challenges and safety risks at intersections as traffic volumes grow and congestion worsens. Agencies need safer\, more balanced designs that keep people moving. Innovative intersection designs offer many safety and operational benefits\, and are being built more often because they can deliver more for less. In the case of U-Turn-based intersection designs\, certain movements that are higher risk – such as direct left-turns – are modified to a combination of right-turns and U-turns. DESCRIPTION:This hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day.  Independent work will include quizzes\, readings\, videos and short assignments.  Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB)\, a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success. \nThis 2-day class provides an introduction to the software and can be a refresher for those already familiar with its capabilities. Based on real-world examples\, students have the opportunity to use Autodesk Civil 3D on a land development project\, starting with basic surveying and including all other major components such as surfaces\, parcels and sites\, roadway design\, grading\, utilities\, and plotted sheets. \nYou will need your own PC laptop with a minimum of 8 Gb RAM.
