DESCRIPTION:This course\, similar to our Work Zone Safety Awareness Program\, is specifically being offered to New Jersey municipal and county public works and utilities participants who require an overview of working safely in the roadway. As new or veteran employees enter or re-enter the public works profession\, they are frequently required to set up short-term work zones or are assigned to long-term projects. There are no allowances for errors when working next to traffic\, so it is important for personnel to have a solid understanding of work zone safety compliance with the national MUTCD standards. SUMMARY:Bicycles and Pedestrian: Meeting the Needs (1 Day Hybrid Online Class)
DESCRIPTION:Many communities in the United States were not designed for pedestrian and bicycle travel. However\, today walkability and bikeabilityare important for active transportation and are indicators of a livable community. The objective of this workshop is to equip participants with information on designing and maintaining safer\, more comfortable\, accessible communities so that walking is a viable transportation choice for everyone\, including seniors\, children and people with visual\, mobility and other disabilities and that bicycling is a viable transportation choice for people of all ages.The class provides current information on the design\,operation and maintenance of successful pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Emphasis is placed on the importance of maintaining accessibility and MUTCD compliance while at the same time encouraging innovation. Course topics covered are outlined below. \nThis hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day.  Independent work will include quizzes\, readings\, videos and short assignments.  Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB)\, a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success.

DESCRIPTION:A systemic approach to safety involves widely implemented improvements based on high-risk roadway features correlated with specific severe crash types. The approach helps agencies broaden their traffic safety efforts at little extra cost. A system-based approach acknowledges crashes alone are not always sufficient to determine what countermeasures to implement\, particularly on low volume local and rural roadways where crash densities are lower\, and in many urban areas where there are conflicts between vehicles and vulnerable road users (pedestrians\, bicyclists\, and motorcyclists). KLC has trained thousands of people worldwide around these four competencies\, which help people better diagnose problems and situations\, manage themselves\, energize others around a common purpose and intervene in ways that are more skillful and successful. \nAbout The Facilitator\nEmily Wilder is an Education Program Manager at the University of Kansas Transportation Center and the National LTAP Association’s Liaison to the APWA. Emily holds a M.S. in Management and Leadership and is in the process of becoming a Teacher with the Kansas Leadership Center. She uses this experience and education to manage professional development training through Kansas LTAP\, where results speak for themselves. Over the course of one year\, overall class enrollment increased by 58 percent andstudent contact hours increased by 42 percent through strategic management. SUMMARY:Intermediate Work Zone (1 Day Hybrid Online Class)
DESCRIPTION:This hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day. Independent work will include quizzes\, readings\, videos and short assignments. Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB)\, a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success. \nFederal requirements now instruct state and local governments to train personnel in work zone traffic control relevant to the job decisions that each individual is required to make. This workshop provides training needed to properly install and monitor work zones for construction and maintenance projects for long-term (greater than three consecutive days) operations. This course provides comprehensive training on work zone standards\, guidelines\, installations and removal procedures\, inspection\, liability\, documentation and supervisory skills. Several workshops included in this course are designed to provide hands-on experience implementing and modifying temporary traffic control plans for various real-life situations. It also teaches how to recognize\, analyze\, correct\, and document deficiencies. At the conclusion of this workshop\, a short open-book written exam will be administered to all attendees. DESCRIPTION:If there were 32 chances for your family member to make a deadly mistake and you were able lower that number to only 8 chances\, why wouldn’t you? Roundabouts\, as many of us already know\, convert a traditional intersection with 32 conflict points into an intersection with only 8 conflict points. (And the 8 conflicts points are generally at MUCH lower speeds.) It is because of this type of safety benefit that many communities in Ohio and around the world are looking to Roundabouts as a key way to improve roadway safety at intersections. \nOhio’s Roundabouts have grown in number and type over recent years and presenter Hillary Isebrands has helped this growth by training many through the National Highway Institute “Modern Roundabouts: Intersections Designed for Safety” course. SUMMARY:Short Span Bridge Economy and Life Cycle Costs
DESCRIPTION:State\, county and municipality bridge owners are replacing and need to replace many older and deteriorated bridges in their inventories.  A common concern they face is selecting economical bridge material\, construction techniques and protection systems that will perform well throughout the bridge service life.  This presentation examines First Costs and Life Cycle Costs of typical concrete and steel girder type bridges.  First Costs analyses are based on actual bridge projects.  For Life Cycle Costs\, historical life histories of simple and multi-span\, short and medium span length\, rolled-shape\, plate-girder\, precast box\, and precast I-beam bridges were analyzed.  The results\, comparisons and conclusions will give owners information on expected performance and investment costs of various bridge alternatives as they administer their bridge replacement programs. \nMichael G.
