SUMMARY:Introduction to Transportation Asset Management Plans (4 Week Online Class)
DESCRIPTION:At a fundamental level\, asset management involves understanding an agency’s assets\, the level of performance expected of those assets\, and the relationship between performance and the funding needed to operate and maintain the assets. A solid understanding of these relationships helps agencies determine the best strategy for investing in their asset network. The training starts with a discussion on the benefits of an asset management plan and wraps up identifying performance measures of an asset management plan.  This 4-week on-line class introduces asset and data management guiding principles and key components of a transportation asset management plan. \nJoin instructor\, Walt Catlett for this lively online class and discussion forum that will change the way you think about transportation asset management plan development.  Over a 4-week period\, you will have the chance to create a transportation asset management plan\, leaning on existing data and documents.  You will learn organizational tips for putting together a team of key personnel to lead\, craft and produced a TAMP.  By the end of the 4 weeks\, you will have created an effective TAMP that will allow you to take the step towards implementation. \nEach week\, a new module will be released\, including a recorded lecture\, quiz\, discussion forum and homework assignment. You will have 7 days to review the lecture and complete the weekly assignments. The instructor will be available by email and phone for questions and comments during the class and will be interacting with students through the weekly discussion forum. SUMMARY:Ethics for Engineers – Jeopardy Style! Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Obeying the law is what we have to do. Behaving ethically is what we ought to do\, but not necessarily have to. This leads to a dilemma all engineers must deal with on a daily basis. Ethical decision making is one of the chief responsibilities of leaders in any profession. This presentation\, based in part on a well-known television game show\, will engage you in an interactive discussion on engineering ethics by utilizing the ethics canons of various engineering professional societies as they relate to situations civil engineers often experience. \nThe presenter will be Ted Green\, P.E. (NJ\, NY\, PA\, MA)\, of the New Jersey\nLTAP Center. \nPlease register to participate in the webinar at:\nhttps://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/741446177424987404

SUMMARY:Intermediate Work Zone (1 Day Hybrid Online Class)
DESCRIPTION:This hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day. Independent work will include quizzes\, readings\, videos and short assignments. Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB)\, a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success. \nFederal requirements now instruct state and local governments to train personnel in work zone traffic control relevant to the job decisions that each individual is required to make. This workshop provides training needed to properly install and monitor work zones for construction and maintenance projects for long-term (greater than three consecutive days) operations. This course provides comprehensive training on work zone standards\, guidelines\, installations and removal procedures\, inspection\, liability\, documentation and supervisory skills. Several workshops included in this course are designed to provide hands-on experience implementing and modifying temporary traffic control plans for various real-life situations. It also teaches how to recognize\, analyze\, correct\, and document deficiencies. At the conclusion of this workshop\, a short open-book written exam will be administered to all attendees. A VDOT-issued training card will be

SUMMARY:Roundabouts Update Webinar
DESCRIPTION:If there were 32 chances for your family member to make a deadly mistake and you were able lower that number to only 8 chances\, why wouldn’t you? Roundabouts\, as many of us already know\, convert a traditional intersection with 32 conflict points into an intersection with only 8 conflict points. (And the 8 conflicts points are generally at MUCH lower speeds.) It is because of this type of safety benefit that many communities in Ohio and around the world are looking to Roundabouts as a key way to improve roadway safety at intersections. \nOhio’s Roundabouts have grown in number and type over recent years and presenter Hillary Isebrands has helped this growth by training many through the National Highway Institute “Modern Roundabouts: Intersections Designed for Safety” course. During this webinar\, Engineer Isebrands will provide an update on recent developments and the current state-of-practice for Roundabouts. Early registration is encouraged\, as there is no charge for this webinar and due to the popularity of this topic\, registration may fill to capacity.

SUMMARY:Preparing an Asset Management Plan for your Pavements
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Cornell Local Roads Program Technical Assistance Engineer Geoffrey R. Scott\, PE \nHaving a plan in place is a valuable way to determine the how and where to make critical investments when maintaining and improving a municipality’s assets. This webinar will discuss the information necessary for a good inventory\, including a means of assessing your pavements\, evaluating the results\, and using that information to develop a plan to best manage the limited funding available while maintaining and improving your roadway network.

SUMMARY:Short Span Bridge Economy and Life Cycle Costs
DESCRIPTION:State\, county and municipality bridge owners are replacing and need to replace many older and deteriorated bridges in their inventories.  A common concern they face is selecting economical bridge material\, construction techniques and protection systems that will perform well throughout the bridge service life.  This presentation examines First Costs and Life Cycle Costs of typical concrete and steel girder type bridges.  First Costs analyses are based on actual bridge projects.  For Life Cycle Costs\, historical life histories of simple and multi-span\, short and medium span length\, rolled-shape\, plate-girder\, precast box\, and precast I-beam bridges were analyzed.  The results\, comparisons and conclusions will give owners information on expected performance and investment costs of various bridge alternatives as they administer their bridge replacement programs. \nMichael G. SUMMARY:Development of eSPAN140 and Short-Span Steel Bridge Design Standards
DESCRIPTION:A considerable number of bridges in the United States are either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.  Consequently\, one of the main focuses of the bridge industry is on design techniques that provide a high-quality and cost-effective product in a relatively short amount of time\, with less maintenance required and a longer life span.  Standardized bridge plans significantly reduce design time\, increase and provide cost-effective solutions in the nation’s effort to repair and upgrade the infrastructure.  Therefore\, in this study\, standard short-span steel bridge designs were developed to create a design aid (eSPAN140) for bridge engineers.  In these designs\, bridges with spans ranging from 40 feet to 140 feet in 5 foot increments were developed for rolled beam sections\, homogeneous plate girder sections and hybrid plate girder sections.  The rolled sections were designed using two design approaches: the lightest weight possible and the lightest weight possible with a limited section depth. \nGregory K. Michaelson\, Ph.D.\, P.E. – Assistant Professor\, Department of Civil Engineering at Marshall University

SUMMARY:Innovative Mechanisms to Deliver Safety Projects
DESCRIPTION:An FHWA EDC-5 Webinar in collaboration with NLTAPA and the National Center for Rural Road Safety. Rural roadway departures make up a third of U.S. traffic fatalities-about 30 people a day. The Every Day Counts round five (EDC-5) initiative\, Focus on Reducing Rural Roadway Departures (FoRRRwD)\, features four pillars: Addressing All Public Roads\, Systemic Approach\, Safety Action Plans\, and Proven Countermeasures. This webinar focuses on the first pillar. \nThis webinar will feature: \n\nSteve Landry\, Maine DOT\, will discuss Maine DOT’s use of safety supply (Curve Warning Signs\, RRFBs\, Speed Feedback Signs) procurement projects where state procurement procedures are used\, and local public agencies or State forces perform installation at their cost.\nMark Thomas\, Mississippi DOT (MDOT)\, will discuss how agencies in Mississippi have used agency force account to deliver roadway departure countermeasures\, and a program where MDOT provides warning and advisory signage to local governments to install.\nPatricia Burke\, Montana DOT (MDT)\, will discuss MDT’s use of Job Order Contracting to streamline the delivery of safety projects.
