SUMMARY:Intermediate Work Zone (1 Day Hybrid Online Class)
DESCRIPTION:This hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day. Independent work will include quizzes\, readings\, videos and short assignments. Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB)\, a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success. \nFederal requirements now instruct state and local governments to train personnel in work zone traffic control relevant to the job decisions that each individual is required to make. This workshop provides training needed to properly install and monitor work zones for construction and maintenance projects for long-term (greater than three consecutive days) operations. This course provides comprehensive training on work zone standards\, guidelines\, installations and removal procedures\, inspection\, liability\, documentation and supervisory skills. Several workshops included in this course are designed to provide hands-on experience implementing and modifying temporary traffic control plans for various real-life situations. It also teaches how to recognize\, analyze\, correct\, and document deficiencies. At the conclusion of this workshop\, a short open-book written exam will be administered to all attendees. Roundabouts\, as many of us already know\, convert a traditional intersection with 32 conflict points into an intersection with only 8 conflict points. (And the 8 conflicts points are generally at MUCH lower speeds.) It is because of this type of safety benefit that many communities in Ohio and around the world are looking to Roundabouts as a key way to improve roadway safety at intersections. \nOhio’s Roundabouts have grown in number and type over recent years and presenter Hillary Isebrands has helped this growth by training many through the National Highway Institute “Modern Roundabouts: Intersections Designed for Safety” course. SUMMARY:Short Span Bridge Economy and Life Cycle Costs
DESCRIPTION:State\, county and municipality bridge owners are replacing and need to replace many older and deteriorated bridges in their inventories.  A common concern they face is selecting economical bridge material\, construction techniques and protection systems that will perform well throughout the bridge service life.  This presentation examines First Costs and Life Cycle Costs of typical concrete and steel girder type bridges.  First Costs analyses are based on actual bridge projects.  For Life Cycle Costs\, historical life histories of simple and multi-span\, short and medium span length\, rolled-shape\, plate-girder\, precast box\, and precast I-beam bridges were analyzed.  The results\, comparisons and conclusions will give owners information on expected performance and investment costs of various bridge alternatives as they administer their bridge replacement programs. \nMichael G. SUMMARY:Development of eSPAN140 and Short-Span Steel Bridge Design Standards
DESCRIPTION:A considerable number of bridges in the United States are either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.  Consequently\, one of the main focuses of the bridge industry is on design techniques that provide a high-quality and cost-effective product in a relatively short amount of time\, with less maintenance required and a longer life span.  Standardized bridge plans significantly reduce design time\, increase and provide cost-effective solutions in the nation’s effort to repair and upgrade the infrastructure.  Therefore\, in this study\, standard short-span steel bridge designs were developed to create a design aid (eSPAN140) for bridge engineers.  In these designs\, bridges with spans ranging from 40 feet to 140 feet in 5 foot increments were developed for rolled beam sections\, homogeneous plate girder sections and hybrid plate girder sections.  The rolled sections were designed using two design approaches: the lightest weight possible and the lightest weight possible with a limited section depth. \nGregory K. KS LTAP is happy to offer free webinar training on Key Leadership Principles developed by the Kansas Leadership Center. This series is recommended for all levels because we’ve learned that leadership is an activity\, not a position\, and anyone can lead – anytime\, anywhere. \nWhat makes the Kansas Leadership Center different? The principles and competencies covered at KLC can help anyone hone the skills needed to successfully confront problems in organizations and communities  KLC is different in that it focuses on helping people from all positions\, backgrounds and sectors learn the same four competencies of leadership. KLC has trained thousands of people worldwide around these four competencies\, which help people better diagnose problems and situations\, manage themselves\, energize others around a common purpose and intervene in ways that are more skillful and successful. \nAbout The Facilitator\nEmily Wilder is an Education Program Manager at the University of Kansas Transportation Center and the National LTAP Association’s Liaison to the APWA. Emily holds a M.S. in Management and Leadership and is in the process of becoming a Teacher with the Kansas Leadership Center. She uses this experience and education to manage professional development training through Kansas LTAP\, where results speak for themselves. Over the course of one year\, overall class enrollment increased by 58 percent andstudent contact hours increased by 42 percent through strategic management. SUMMARY:ADA Self Evaluations/Elements Of PROWAG
DESCRIPTION:With the 25-year anniversary of the passage of ADA\, it is critical that local governments recognize their obligation to upgrade streets\, sidewalks and facilities for accessibility. ADA requires that public agencies perform self-evaluations and prepare transition plans. They were to have been completed by July 26\, 1992 and be updated periodically. The morning portion of the workshop examines the background to\, contents of and enforcement of the self-evaluation and transition plan requirements. Several landmark court cases are also highlighted. \nA case study is presented to illustrate these items. Participants will leave the session with a “To Do” list of next steps they need to take and a toolkit of helpful resources. The afternoon session overviews the current criteria for accessible public rights-of-way including the pedestrian access route\, curb ramps and detectable warnings\, accessible pedestrian signals\, street furniture\, on-street parking and temporary traffic control requirements for pedestrians.

Traffic calming uses physical design and other measures to improve safety for motorists\, pedestrians and cyclists. This is a full-day course that introduces how a municipality can establish a traffic calming program for their roadways to increase safety and accessibility. Traffic calming is an engineering tool whose purpose is to address excessive traffic speed and/or cut-through traffic on residential streets. \nWe’ll explore the definition of traffic calming and review the various types of traffic calming devices. The class discussion will outline both potential positive and negative impacts on a neighborhood\, and reviews a sample traffic calming program. During this workshop\, related issues\, such as impacts of traffic calming devices on liability\, roadway maintenance\, and emergency service will be discussed. Participants perform case studies\, applying traffic calming measures to address traffic concerns. \nThe intended audience is anyone who is responsible for receiving complaints or inquiries about speeding and/or cut-through traffic issues. This includes engineers\, public works superintendents\, municipal managers\, planners\, etc. Law enforcement and elected officials may also benefit from this course.

SUMMARY:ADA In Temporary Traffic Control
DESCRIPTION:After a brief discussion of the relevant legal authorities (ADA\, PROWAG\, MUTCD)\, the workshop describes the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities as they travel in the built environment. The basic requirements of the Pedestrian Access Route are reviewed\, including width\, protruding objects\, cross slope\, grade\, surfaces and curb ramps/detectable warnings. \nThe requirements for the alternate pedestrian access route are reviewed. Tools to minimize the impacts of construction/maintenance/utility operations on pedestrians will be discussed\, namely: 1) phasing of construction\, 2) utilizing detailed plans\, 3) effective signing/communication and 4) effective barriers/barricades. The session will conclude with an interactive review/discussion of various work zone scenarios and best practices.
