SUMMARY:Development of eSPAN140 and Short-Span Steel Bridge Design Standards
DESCRIPTION:A considerable number of bridges in the United States are either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.  Consequently\, one of the main focuses of the bridge industry is on design techniques that provide a high-quality and cost-effective product in a relatively short amount of time\, with less maintenance required and a longer life span.  Standardized bridge plans significantly reduce design time\, increase and provide cost-effective solutions in the nation’s effort to repair and upgrade the infrastructure.  Therefore\, in this study\, standard short-span steel bridge designs were developed to create a design aid (eSPAN140) for bridge engineers.  In these designs\, bridges with spans ranging from 40 feet to 140 feet in 5 foot increments were developed for rolled beam sections\, homogeneous plate girder sections and hybrid plate girder sections.  The rolled sections were designed using two design approaches: the lightest weight possible and the lightest weight possible with a limited section depth. \nGregory K. DESCRIPTION:An FHWA EDC-5 Webinar in collaboration with NLTAPA and the National Center for Rural Road Safety. Rural roadway departures make up a third of U.S. traffic fatalities-about 30 people a day. The Every Day Counts round five (EDC-5) initiative\, Focus on Reducing Rural Roadway Departures (FoRRRwD)\, features four pillars: Addressing All Public Roads\, Systemic Approach\, Safety Action Plans\, and Proven Countermeasures. This webinar focuses on the first pillar. \nThis webinar will feature: \n\nSteve Landry\, Maine DOT\, will discuss Maine DOT’s use of safety supply (Curve Warning Signs\, RRFBs\, Speed Feedback Signs) procurement projects where state procurement procedures are used\, and local public agencies or State forces perform installation at their cost.\nMark Thomas\, Mississippi DOT (MDOT)\, will discuss how agencies in Mississippi have used agency force account to deliver roadway departure countermeasures\, and a program where MDOT provides warning and advisory signage to local governments to install.\nPatricia Burke\, Montana DOT (MDT)\, will discuss MDT’s use of Job Order Contracting to streamline the delivery of safety projects.

SUMMARY:ADA Self Evaluations/Elements Of PROWAG
DESCRIPTION:With the 25-year anniversary of the passage of ADA\, it is critical that local governments recognize their obligation to upgrade streets\, sidewalks and facilities for accessibility. ADA requires that public agencies perform self-evaluations and prepare transition plans. They were to have been completed by July 26\, 1992 and be updated periodically. The morning portion of the workshop examines the background to\, contents of and enforcement of the self-evaluation and transition plan requirements. Several landmark court cases are also highlighted. \nA case study is presented to illustrate these items. Participants will leave the session with a “To Do” list of next steps they need to take and a toolkit of helpful resources. The afternoon session overviews the current criteria for accessible public rights-of-way including the pedestrian access route\, curb ramps and detectable warnings\, accessible pedestrian signals\, street furniture\, on-street parking and temporary traffic control requirements for pedestrians.

Traffic calming uses physical design and other measures to improve safety for motorists\, pedestrians and cyclists. This is a full-day course that introduces how a municipality can establish a traffic calming program for their roadways to increase safety and accessibility. Traffic calming is an engineering tool whose purpose is to address excessive traffic speed and/or cut-through traffic on residential streets. \nWe’ll explore the definition of traffic calming and review the various types of traffic calming devices. The class discussion will outline both potential positive and negative impacts on a neighborhood\, and reviews a sample traffic calming program. During this workshop\, related issues\, such as impacts of traffic calming devices on liability\, roadway maintenance\, and emergency service will be discussed. Participants perform case studies\, applying traffic calming measures to address traffic concerns. \nThe intended audience is anyone who is responsible for receiving complaints or inquiries about speeding and/or cut-through traffic issues. DESCRIPTION:After a brief discussion of the relevant legal authorities (ADA\, PROWAG\, MUTCD)\, the workshop describes the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities as they travel in the built environment. The basic requirements of the Pedestrian Access Route are reviewed\, including width\, protruding objects\, cross slope\, grade\, surfaces and curb ramps/detectable warnings. \nThe requirements for the alternate pedestrian access route are reviewed. Tools to minimize the impacts of construction/maintenance/utility operations on pedestrians will be discussed\, namely: 1) phasing of construction\, 2) utilizing detailed plans\, 3) effective signing/communication and 4) effective barriers/barricades. SUMMARY:Development and Experimental Validation of Composite Press-Brake Formed Modular Steel Tub Girders for Short Span Bridges
DESCRIPTION:This presentation is focused on the development of modular shallow trapezoidal boxes fabricated from  cold-bent structural steel plate using standard mill plate widths and thicknesses. This concept was developed by a technical working group within the Steel Market Development Institute’s (a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute) Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance (SSSBA)\, led by the current authors. This working group consists of all stakeholders in the steel bridge industry\, including mills\, fabricators\, service centers\, industry trade organizations\, universities\, and bridge owners. The goal of this project was to develop an innovative and economical modular solution for the short-span steel bridge market. Presented is the methodology used for the design of this system along with experimental validation of the modular composite girder’s flexural capacity. Using experimentally-verified analytical methods\, the applicability of AASHTO specifications in computing the flexural capacity of the proposed system was assessed. Results of this study show that AASHTO specifications are conservative when employed to compute the composite girder’s ultimate capacity. SUMMARY:Manufacturer Steel Bridge Solutions Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Bridge manufacturing firms pre-fabricate bridges that are delivered to the site ready for erection. The bridge is built as components\, modules and assemblies in a quality controlled shop\, shipped to the bridge site\, and erected. This results in time savings for design and construction\, cost savings\, and increased site safety\, and the pieces will fit because of the quality shop fabrication. Most of these firm’s bridges are also applicable for Accelerated Bridge Construction.  However\, another way to think of them is that they are “A Bridge in a Box\,” in that the manufacturer has worked out all the design and details and the owner gets an aesthetically pleasing bridge without having the inconvenience of going through a typical design-bid-build process.  This presentation will showcase several bridge projects from Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance bridge manufacturer members. \nMichael G.
