SUMMARY:Development and Experimental Validation of Composite Press-Brake Formed Modular Steel Tub Girders for Short Span Bridges
DESCRIPTION:This presentation is focused on the development of modular shallow trapezoidal boxes fabricated from  cold-bent structural steel plate using standard mill plate widths and thicknesses. This concept was developed by a technical working group within the Steel Market Development Institute’s (a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute) Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance (SSSBA)\, led by the current authors. This working group consists of all stakeholders in the steel bridge industry\, including mills\, fabricators\, service centers\, industry trade organizations\, universities\, and bridge owners. The goal of this project was to develop an innovative and economical modular solution for the short-span steel bridge market. Presented is the methodology used for the design of this system along with experimental validation of the modular composite girder’s flexural capacity. Using experimentally-verified analytical methods\, the applicability of AASHTO specifications in computing the flexural capacity of the proposed system was assessed. Results of this study show that AASHTO specifications are conservative when employed to compute the composite girder’s ultimate capacity. Therefore\, a more accurate means of computing the capacity of the proposed system are proposed. \nKarl E. Barth\, Ph.D. – Jack H. Samples Distinguished Professor at West Virginia University

SUMMARY:Manage Self – Know Your Strengths\, Vulnerabilities\, and Triggers
DESCRIPTION:Now\, more than ever\, leaders are needed to help their agencies and communities  tackle the changing challenges we’re facing in light of COVID-19. Luckily\, leadership is a skill that can be developed through learning and practice. KS LTAP is happy to offer free webinar training on Key Leadership Principles developed by the Kansas Leadership Center. This series is recommended for all levels because we’ve learned that leadership is an activity\, not a position\, and anyone can lead – anytime\, anywhere. \nWhat makes the Kansas Leadership Center different? The principles and competencies covered at KLC can help anyone hone the skills needed to successfully confront problems in organizations and communities  KLC is different in that it focuses on helping people from all positions\, backgrounds and sectors learn the same four competencies of leadership. KLC has trained thousands of people worldwide around these four competencies\, which help people better diagnose problems and situations\, manage themselves\, energize others around a common purpose and intervene in ways that are more skillful and successful. \nAbout The Facilitator\nEmily Wilder is an Education Program Manager at the University of Kansas Transportation Center and the National LTAP Association’s Liaison to the APWA. Emily holds a M.S. in Management and Leadership and is in the process of becoming a Teacher with the Kansas Leadership Center. She uses this experience and education to manage professional development training through Kansas LTAP\, where results speak for themselves. Over the course of one year\, overall class enrollment increased by 58 percent andstudent contact hours increased by 42 percent through strategic management. Emily also develops and teaches courses on leadership and conflict resolution. \nLook for registration on ksltap.org soon!

SUMMARY:Manufacturer Steel Bridge Solutions Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Bridge manufacturing firms pre-fabricate bridges that are delivered to the site ready for erection. The bridge is built as components\, modules and assemblies in a quality controlled shop\, shipped to the bridge site\, and erected. This results in time savings for design and construction\, cost savings\, and increased site safety\, and the pieces will fit because of the quality shop fabrication. Most of these firm’s bridges are also applicable for Accelerated Bridge Construction.  However\, another way to think of them is that they are “A Bridge in a Box\,” in that the manufacturer has worked out all the design and details and the owner gets an aesthetically pleasing bridge without having the inconvenience of going through a typical design-bid-build process.  This presentation will showcase several bridge projects from Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance bridge manufacturer members. \nMichael G. SUMMARY:Traffic Engineering Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:In the Traffic Engineering Fundamentals 3-Part Webinar Series we will be looking at the following topics: \n\nTraffic data and traffic studies – What kind of data do you need to collect and what do you do with it once you have it?\nTraffic design considerations for various types of roadways – Why do our roadways and intersections look the way they do and what are some of the options that are out there?\nTraffic operational considerations – Once you have designed it and built it\, how do you make it all work well?\n\nThis training is a high-level overview of the real basic concepts of traffic engineering and is thus ideal for people that are just starting to work in the field\, or for people that maybe work in related fields that want to learn the lingo of traffic engineering. One of the things that we aim to accomplish in the workshop is to introduce the various topics and point attendees towards resources where they can learn more if they are interested in additional information. \n\nSession 1 – Traffic Data and Studies (4/14/2020\, 10am-12pm)\nSession 2 – Traffic Design (4/15/2020\, 10am-12pm)\nSession 3 – Traffic Operations (4/16/2020\, 10am-12pm)\n\nYou are welcome to register for one\, two\, or all three sessions. Each individual webinar session will award 2.0 PDHs. Up to 6.0 PDHs can be earned for attending and completing all three sessions.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to FHWA’s Quadrant Roadway Intersection Informational Guide
DESCRIPTION:Alternative intersections and interchanges offer the potential to improve safety and reduce delay at a lower cost and with fewer impacts than traditional solutions.  In 2014\, the Federal Highway Administration published informational guides for four innovative designs:  the Median U-Turn (MUT)\, Displaced Left Turn (DLT)\, Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT)\, and Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI).  Recently\, a fifth guide has been developed to provide information on the Quadrant Roadway Intersection (QRI). \nFHWA is pleased to offer this webinar to all Federal\, State\, Municipal\, and Consultant transportation practitioners responsible for or interested in providing innovative solutions at intersections in need of operational\, safety\, and/or multimodal improvements. The webinar presentation will introduce the QRI Guide and review the information presented in the guide\, focusing on intersection operations\, safety\, various geometric forms\, and planning and design criteria to consider when evaluating the QRI as a potential intersection improvement alternative.  The presentation will also include information provided from several DOTs that have constructed a QRI in recent years.   Certificates of completion for professional development hours (PDHs) will be provided upon request.
