SUMMARY:ADA In Temporary Traffic Control
DESCRIPTION:After a brief discussion of the relevant legal authorities (ADA\, PROWAG\, MUTCD)\, the workshop describes the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities as they travel in the built environment. The basic requirements of the Pedestrian Access Route are reviewed\, including width\, protruding objects\, cross slope\, grade\, surfaces and curb ramps/detectable warnings. The requirements for the alternate pedestrian access route are reviewed. \nTools to minimize the impacts of construction/maintenance/utility operations on pedestrians will be discussed\, namely: 1) phasing of construction\, 2) utilizing detailed plans\, 3) effective signing/communication and 4) effective barriers/barricades. The session will conclude with an interactive review/discussion of various work zone scenarios and best practices. \nUpon completion of the class\, participants will be able to: 1) assess a TTC zone set-up for compliance with ADA/MUTCD and 2) design a compliant TTC zone.   Log on instructions will be in your registration confirmation.   Advanced Road Scholar Credit

DESCRIPTION:  \nThere is no single pathway toward achieving a Safe System and there is no recipe for implementation. Achieving a Safe System is a complex journey that requires strengthening all elements in the system by numerous stakeholders. Stakeholders across the transportation community are already acting to advance the Safe System approach by making decisions guided by the underlying Safe System principles. In this webinar\, you will learn about strategies that state and local transportation agencies are implementing to advance the Safe System approach with focus on the Safe Roads and Safe Speed elements. The strategies are presented as a “playbook” intended to assist agencies by providing ideas and potential practices for Safe System implementation. Similar with a playbook for a football team\, it is not necessary to run every play to achieve your winning objective. Also\, selecting appropriate “plays” to run will depend on where your agency is located “on the field”. \nMany agencies may already be undertaking many of the practices identified. Also\, just like in a live game\, agencies may need to “call an audible” and adjust a recommendation to fit the needs of their organization. Selecting appropriate plays for your agency depends upon multiple factors and considerations such as your agency’s goals\, current policies\, funding availability\, and project development practices. SUMMARY:A Safe System Based Framework for Assessing Intersections (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Under a Safe System approach\, reaching the zero goal requires managing the circumstances of crashes such that the kinetic energy forces imposed on the human body do not result in death or serious injury. At an intersection\, this is accomplished by influencing conflict points\, speed\, and crash angles\, and considering exposure and complexity. Intersection projects are opportunities to explore how to apply Safe System principles to the project development planning and design decisions in support of reaching the zero goal\, as well as a performance-based approach to safety. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sponsored an effort to develop a Safe System for Intersections (SSI) framework and methodology\, which represents a first step toward the development of objective and implementable analyses that reflect key Safe System concepts. \nThe Safe System assessment of an intersection can serve as an additional metric to inform alternatives analysis and identify an optimal solution for an intersection. The SSI method uses data that are typically available early in a project development lifecycle. DESCRIPTION:In March 2022\, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) issued a report to Congress detailing the agency’s commitment to advance widespread implementation of the Complete Streets design model to help improve safety and accessibility for all users. Within the five elements of the Safe System approach\, State and local transportation agencies focus on designing and operating safe roads that protect all road users while providing access and mobility through road designs and safety countermeasures that encourage safe speeds. Complete Streets are an embodiment of the safe roads and safe speeds elements of the Safe System approach. Safety\, accessibility\, and connectivity are closely linked to transportation equity. Equitable transportation provides access and options for all users regardless of race\, gender\, age\, disability status\, or class. Roadside safety hardware is a proven countermeasure. Hardware such as barriers\, sign supports\, and work zone devices are commonly used to reduce the potential severity of these crashes. SUMMARY:NJLTAP – Design of ADA Curb Ramps and Pedestrian Access Routes
DESCRIPTION:This is an asynchronous workshop with portions prerecorded as well as live online content. Participants are required to view a prerequisite video prior to the live virtual workshop. The link to the prerequisite video will be included with your confirmation email when you register. \nThis training is designed to ensure that pedestrian facilities and access routes\, in particular curb ramps\, along our roadways are properly design and constructed for all individuals\, including those with disabilities. This training was developed to provide information and good practices for those involved in the design and maintenance of curb ramps and pedestrian facilities\, and for those individuals that ensure the compliance to applicable accessibility laws and guidelines. \nThe workshop will include a brief overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)\, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requirements\, NJDOT requirements\, AASHTO “Green Book” requirements\, group exercise designing curb ramps\, and video presentations by the United States Access Board to provide the attendees with background information and points-of-view of persons with disabilities navigating our pedestrian network. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:NHT2 - Innovative Solutions to Roadway Slope Stabilization
DESCRIPTION:Roadway slopes and embankments are considered geotechnical assets by the FHWA and are an important part of asset management programs being implemented\, developed\, or discussed from the Federal to the local level. Evaluation\, management\, and maintenance of roadway slopes and embankments are critical steps in mitigating risk\, supporting financial decisions\, protecting public safety\, and ensuring mobility\, especially during natural disasters and times of crisis. In this presentation\, different types of slopes and the physical processes which affect their stability will be reviewed\, along with visible signs that may indicate slope movement is occurring. Some common slope stabilization methods will be discussed\, and innovative technologies and methods will be introduced. Design concepts for stabilizing and repairing roadways impacted by unstable slopes and landslides will be demonstrated through project examples. \nThe instructor\, Dave Brogan: \nDave Brogan is GeoStabilization International’s (GSI) Project Development Engineer for New England and is a licensed Professional Engineer in five states. A graduate of UNH he has worked as a research associate at the University of Rhode Island and has 17 years of experience as a geotechnical consultant with several New England firms prior to joining GSI. SUMMARY:NCLTAP - Designing Pedestrian Facilities for Accessibility
DESCRIPTION:Facilities in the public right-of-way (including walkways\, ramps\, curb ramps and landings\, crosswalks\, and pedestrian overpasses and underpasses) must be designed\, constructed and maintained to serve all users. To meet the needs of all users\, those involved with designing\, building and maintaining infrastructure need a clear understanding of the wide range of abilities that occur within the population and the challenges in the public right-of-way faced by persons with disabilities. This course will identify applicable laws\, regulations\, guidelines and standards pertaining to accessibility for persons with disabilities. Requirements for ensuring accessibility in existing facilities versus work in new construction and alternations will be discussed. Design elements necessary for achieving accessibility in the public right-of-way will be reviewed. Best practices will be identified. A detailed handout will be provided\, including resources on accessibility. Specific Topics to Be Covered Include: • Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) and Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines: Laws and Regulations • Legal Requirements • Pedestrian Characteristics • Pedestrian Access Route (PAR) • Curb Ramps and Other Transitions • Detectable Warnings • Pedestrian Crossings • Street Furniture and Parking • Work Zones and Maintenance • Accessible Pedestrian Signals The target audience for this workshop is local\, state and private sector personnel with responsibility for designing\, constructing and maintaining facilities in the public right—of-way.
