SUMMARY:Excavating and Trench Safety (Half-Day Hybrid Online Class)
DESCRIPTION:This hybrid online class will combine both live instruction and independent online work that you will complete during the day.  Independent work will include quizzes\, readings\, videos and short assignments.  Access to a computer with a webcam (either a camera that is built into your laptop or one that connects via USB)\, a reliable internet connection and a workspace that is free from distraction and noise will set you up for success.  \nThis course covers basic set up of a backhoe work zone\, covering cones\, barricades\, caution tape and other barriers; positioning of essential and non-essential equipment and the declaring of minimum distances for separating machinery and pedestrians. In addition\, the course includes information about Carbon Monoxide hazards while working in a trench. The course also covers excavation issues including utility location\, shoring for backhoe proximity\, inclines\, surface stability\, safe backhoe travel areas and cave-in prevention. \nTrenching and excavation work presents serious hazards to all workers involved. Cave-ins pose the greatest risk and are more likely than some other excavation-related incidents to result in worker fatalities.  This course will address key steps towards preventing or greatly reducing the risk of cave-ins and other excavation related events.  The course accomplishes this by walking the student through ways to define soil classifications\, raising awareness about the importance of proper preplanning procedures\, identifying protective systems\, and describing sloping and benching options for different soil classifications. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Silica’s New Standard – Strategies for Municipal Compliance - Online
DESCRIPTION:Beginning on September 23\, 2017 the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) implemented the new permissible exposure level (PEL) for workers exposed to respirable crystalline silica to be 50 micrograms per cubic meter over an average 8-hour period. Please note that this new exposure limit is expressed in MICROgrams (millionths of a gram). Without exaggeration\, if this silica dust is visible in a field operation\, this new PEL could be exceeded! Municipalities and construction contractors will be particularly impacted by this new regulation because of the variety of tools that are routinely used on concrete pavement\, sidewalk and curbing\, asphalt pavement and any number of other concrete related products in their day-to-day work activities. Jack hammers\, rotary hammers\, along with any number of different types of concrete saws\, chippers and grinders are of particular concern. Fortunately\, the new OSHA regulations do allow for special exceptions on a limited number of these tools. Moreover\, OSHA regulations require that respirator use (worn by workers) can only be selected and utilized as the last resort in achieving compliance. NC LTAP has a seven-hour program available for in-house delivery to help large and small organizations plan for\, implement and comply with this new\, much stricter workplace standard.
