Combating Road Departures uses VDOT’s Crash Tool and published resources for Localities, Planning District Commissions (PDC’s), Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) staff to: identify sites with potential safety problems; characterize accident experience; characterize field conditions; identify contributing factors and appropriate countermeasures; assess countermeasures and select most appropriate; and implement countermeasures and evaluate their effectiveness. Delivered in four (4) modules with hands on exercises and group discussions throughout the day, as well as the presentation workbook, leaves attendees with the tools to select projects for their Transportation Improvement Programs and local Capital Improvement Project 5-year plans using crash data and the Safety Analysis Process.
